History of David O Jones Print E-mail

David Owen Jones was born in Swindon in 1906 and grew up as the youngest of eleven children in the railway town. Along with most families he gravitated towards the great western railway engineering works and over the years he became a highly skilled engineer. He was an accomplished tennis player as was his wife Betty Ellis who was also a very good swimmer. They married in 1936 and soon after, the yearning to be his own boss lead the couple to buy a run down sports and toy shop in Maidenhead. The Jones's made their home there and rebuilt the business, especially after the war. During the war David was recalled to the engineering works to make items for the war effort and so along with the rest of England the focus shifted for a few years! Betty ran the shop by day and the couple did fire watching duties at night during the blitz.

Their first son, also called David was born in 1945 and after Betty developed asthma the doctor recommended the couple moved to a seaside location for her health. The Littlehampton shop opened on August bank holiday 1946 in its present location at 9 High Street. The building was in a distressed state due to neglect and war damage but was soon fully restored. Initially the shop sold a mixture of sporting goods, beach buckets & spades and toys. David and Betty's second sun Tyndall was born in Littlehampton in 1949.

In the early 1950's the toy side was replaced with leather goods and around this time Frances Harrison, who was a family friend had been housekeeper at a neighbouring store Barnards joined the shop. Frances continued working full time until the age of 77 and then became a consultant to the shop right up to her death in 1998 at the grand age of 93. Frances was pivotal in making the shop and success, combining Frances' skills with David and Betty's expertise created an unbeatable team. Meanwhile the business ventured into fishing tackle and bait during the 50's and this area soon became a major part of the business. Model making and plastic model kits where also stocked along with the beach and sports goods which meant the shop was quite a medley.

Tyndall showed an interest in the shop from an early age, helping out selling the beach gear from as young as 6 or 7! On leaving school in 1966 Tyndall joined the staff learning the trade under David and Frances tuition. David semi retired in 1971 and transferred the business to Tyndall. David unfortunately died in 1973 leaving Tyndall and Frances with the shop. The needs of the consumer gradually changed and modifications to the shop were inevitable. Sport came more to the fore which meant that beach goods and model equipment were dropped. In the early 1980's Frances was honoured in the birthday honours list with the British Empire Medal for her extensive charity work. Something which Tyndall has continued with great success. Setting local records for collection amounts year on year!

Major changes took place in 1987 when the leather goods unit and sports unit were combined to create a larger shop. To accommodate this the handbags were dropped but small leathergoods such as wallets, purses and keyholders were retained. During the 1990's the shop expanded once again by converting the office into sales space for the main shop. The business has built a reputation over the years for honest, knowledgable, and fair dealings with traditional service. Tyndall will retire from sole business ownership in early 2009 and will pass the business onto one of his previous Saturday members of staff who will ensure the core values remain. Paul learnt the trade as a Saturday boy from 1994 and soon became a very accomplished and valued member of staff. Tyndall will continue to work in the shop every day alongside a shop manager under Paul's rein. Paul returns to the business with modern marketing experience and skills gained working for a cutting edge international company.
